System Software

System Software consists of the operating system which manages the computer and perform the basic functions of it. Some of the operations task it performs are:

  • Input and Output of data.
  • User Interface - buttons, icons, and windows
  • File Management - keeps track of data
  • Security - Password Protection, how you log on

There are several main operating systems, some are:

DOS - Windows - Mac OS - Unix - Linux

DOS

One of the first operating systems and not many people use it any more. You have to type in a special code to access files and it wasn't as user friendly as Windows.

Windows

A graphical form of DOS. Instead of typing in a code to access a file you can click on the file to access it. It is way easier to use than DOS. Windows has gone through many changes. It was first introduced as Windows 95 then 98, CE, ME, NT, 2000, XP, and Vista.

Mac OS

Sort of like Windows but made by Apple, had a different.

Unix

Unix is a multi-user, multi tasking program operating system, that was first developed in 1960's, and it runs on workstations, minicomputers, and main frames. A multi-tasking operating system means that it can run multiple tasks (such as programs, applications, etc) at the same time.

Linux

An operating system based on Unix but it cost nothing and does just about the same thing.

Can you have two operating systems at once?

Yes, you can have two operating systems on your computer at once, but you can only use one at a time.
