Memory is hardware but I put it on its own page because there are many types of it. Memory card are made up of special chips that can store information. The three main types of memory is RAM, ROM, and Flash memory.
The most important type of memory is RAM. It stores information temporarily, and is lost when the computer is turned off. You can write information to it and read from it. It keeps the programs and data that the computer needs to work with. RAM chips are arranged in a small circuit board called Memory Module. The two types of Memory Modules are: SIMM -Single Inline Memory Module SIMM must be inserted in pairs. DIMM - Dual Inline Memory Module twice as fast and you only need one, so most recent computers only have DIMM.
ROM (Read Only Memory) Stay on your computer permanently, it can't be changed it stores information that your computer needs to run. The information is put on it by the person that makes the computer and after that it can't be taken off or information written to it.
Flash Memory Flash is like RAM and ROM you can write information to it and you can read information from it. Flash Memory is mostly used in Digital Cameras and other electronic devices. Copyright © Zachary Colby 2007 |
