History of Computers

1.

around 1,000 B.C.

People used stone trays with dust and dirt to do calculations. They used finger prints to count, then they started using stones.
2.
around  700 B.C.
The abacus was invented by a scientist in Asia.
3.
1643
Blaise Pascal, a French mathematical invented a mechanical calculator that used wheels and gears to add and subtract numbers.
4.
1832
Charles Babbage designed the Analytical Engine, an unsuccessful machine that was supposed to calculate several problems and remember them, but other inventors used his ideas.
5.
1937
George R Stibitz, an American mathematician invented the first ever electric binary adder, that used binary digits of 1s and 0s to solve math problems.
6.
1944
Howard H. Aiken invented the first ever electric calculator. It was as long as half a football field!!!!!! It had a bunch of wires.
7.
1946
John P. Eckert & John W. Mauchly built a machine called the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Caculator) It was very fast, but huge!
8.
1947
The transistor was invented it was way smaller and lighter then the vacuum tube, that was used in earlier computers.
9.
1959
Microchip was invented, it was so tiny that it had to be built under a microscope (hints the name microchip). It could store lots of information in a small chip.
10.
1981
IBM PC was invented, it used an operating system called DOS, and instead of using a mouse, you have to type in special codes to tell the computer what to do. (You will learn about DOS and operating systems in the System Software section)
11. 1984 The Macintosh computer was invented, it used a mouse a screen where you can click on the icon, instead of having to type in special codes.
12. Today Now we have many computers, and everyday computer technology improves.
